For any racing enthusiasts with an interest in the development of the
thoroughbred this is a gorgeous book - one to drool over and save up
for!
This is a really beautifully produced book; leather bound and gilded,
each copy is individually numbered and signed by the author and
dedicated to a particular Derby winner. The production of a book such
as this is essentially a labour of love and the author must have felt a
wonderful glow of satisfaction as he signed and dedicated each copy. He
has diligently researched this book, seeking out contemporary sources of
information and has as a result produced a volume which will serve as a
standard reference for many years to come. However, so much information
could prove a dull read, but this is laid out in such a way that it
would be difficult to tire of dipping into it again and again.
Michael Church, justifiably, believes that the Derby has been
inextricably interwoven with the history of the thoroughbred since not
only has the race been the ultimate goal of all owners and breeders for
more than two centuries, but such is its' excellence that it has spawned
innumerable 'copies' the world over.
That the race has attained, and maintained, such eminence in the racing
calendar is largely due to the unusual course over which it is run and
the unique demands it makes of the still developing three year old race
horse - qualities which are often proven by the many Derby winners who
become leading sires and who in turn often sire further winners of the
great classic. The gradual changes to the course are traced as are all
developments, many of the most notable occurring during the race's more
recent history, e.g. the introduction of the photo finish and starting
stalls. There is a description of each year's race and the winner's
overall racing career, pedigrees, progeny etc., plus portraits and
photographs which are fascinating in their own right.
All in all this book represents a true celebration of the world's
greatest horserace and would be an ideal gift for someone special - or
perhaps to yourself.
