There will be a chance to visit behind the scenes at racing's HQ on
Sunday 23 August when Newmarket open their yards to the public. The day
will start with many trainers putting their tars of the Gallops through
their paces on Warren Hill off Bury Road/Moulton Road from 9am - 9.30am.
From 9.30am - 1.30pm over 20 trainers - Mark Tompkins, Ed Dunlop and
Neil Graham amongst them - will welcome visitors to look around their
yards. Trainers who were not open last year but who will be welcoming
visitors to their yards this August include Henry Cecil at Warren Place
and William Haggas at Somerville Lodge.
Another attraction will be
Banstead Manor Stud, approximately 2 miles from Newmarket, which will
open fro 12.30pm - 2pm for visitors to see round the stables in a very
beautiful location. The three resident stallions Rainbow Quest, Zafonic
and Zamindar will be paraded between 1pm and 1.30pm.
From 1.30pm Tattersalls will open their gates for further entertainment
commencing at 2pm - a Stallion Parade, a Trainer's Hack Show, a
demonstration by the British Racing School and Celebrity Any Racing
Questions hosted by Channel Four Racing's Derek Thompson.
And for those
who cannot resist 'a shop', Newmarket Business Action have arranged a
Craft Fair with plenty of lovely things for sale. There will be other
side shows for children.
On the following Sunday 30 August John Gosden has kindly agreed to open
his yard from 10am to 1pm.
The charge for each of these days is £5. £2.50 for Senior Citizens and
free for children under 12. For those only attending the attractions at
Tattersalls in the afternoon of Sunday 23 August, there will be an
entrance fee of £1.
The proceeds of the Open Day will be shared equally between the Racing
Welfare Charities, the Stable Lads Welfare Trust and the British Racing
School. These racing benevolent charities provide support for stud and
stable staff nation-wide.
