British Association for the Pure-bred Spanish Horse

1998 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BREED SHOW

The annual breed show run by the association was held on 15th and 16th August at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcs. This was a new venue for the BAPSH which had previously held the majority of its shows at the BEC, Stoneleigh, and the first time for many years that an outdoor show had been held. The weather was wonderful (unusually for the summer of 98!) and the whole show took place in beautiful sunshine.

Judging the Pure-bred Spanish Horse classes, both In-Hand and Ridden, was D Pedro Salas Garau, a well known breeder and judge of the Pure-bred Spanish Horse in Spain, and his selection for the Supreme National In-Hand Champion was the 6 year old bay mare Cana, bred in Spain, and owned by Pauline Medlam of West Sussex. Not only did Cana triumph in the in-hand classes but she was also the winner of the ridden pure-bred Spanish Mare Class on the following day and was placed in the Low School too - truly a lovely and versatile mare. Cana is by Arrogante V out of Cantinera and was born at the Pereto Stud.

Reserve to Cana was the National In-Hand Champion Stallion Salinero VI, owned by Yeguada Pell, a fine looking grey. Salinero won a hard fought victory for the stallion championship, the judge taking some time in deliberating over the merits of the horses before him. Reserve National Champion Stallion was Mr & Mrs Barham s darker grey, Amoroso XXVIII who gained a major victory on the following day under saddle to become Pure-bred Spanish Ridden Champion. Only 5 years old, the best is probably yet to come from this Spanish bred horse, despite his achievements at the National Show this year.

CANA - Supreme Champion.

Reserve Champion in the ridden classes was the bay mare Danes Dulcinea, bred in the UK, ridden by Sandra Williams and owned by Mrs Jilly Peace.

SALINERO - Champion Stallion.

The Hispano-Arabs and Spanish Partbreds In Hand were judged on the
Saturday by Mrs Kay Pole, with the well known figure of Elwyn Hartley Edwards judging the invited breeds, i.e. Lusitanos, Appaloosas and Lipizzaners, in both their In Hand and Ridden classes over the two days. There was unfortunately little or no support for some of these classes by way of entries, which is extremely frustrating for organisers and sponsors alike, not to mention disappointing to spectators. Having seen extremely good entries at Cranleigh and Windsor for example, it was mystifying why exhibitors had not turned up in force at this lovely show.
Hopefully it will become established as its new location and become an important date in the calendar for all of these interesting breeds. There were some Lusitanos on show however and Hilary Linnett had a wonderful show on her most striking looking Stallion Juno taking the In Hand Lusitano Purebred Championship from Mr & Mrs Fox s 2 year old filly, Ondine. Thrilled by Ondine s performance the Fox s have decided to retain her for their stud in Herefordshire. The following day Hilary and Juno won the ridden Lusitano Stallion class as well as receiving first prize in the Grand Parade in traditional dress.
