Tindall & Sons origins lay shrouded in the mist of time. What is known however, is that it probably began life in the front room of a spacious town house in the High Street of Newmarket in the 1870s. There it has remained to this day, providing news, books, stationery and office equipment to the local and surrounding community. The present retail premises stand on one of the oldest occupied sites in the town and has some interesting historical connections. Legend tells of the days of King Charles II, who was a keen racing man, that the cellar underneath the shop was used for cockfighting, with a connecting tunnel running underneath the High Street to Nell Gwynn's house in Palace Street. Who knows there may have been Royal patronage in the past! Gradually from the turn of the century to the l950s the shop changed from selling photographic equipment, sheet music and accessories to news, books and stationery. Since that time many alterations and improvements have been carried out culminating in 1977 with the shop being divided in half, one side devoted to office equipment and stationery, the other to news, books, greetings cards and gifts with a bias towards all things that are horse racing related.
The book shop also runs an up to the minute computer system and runs a free book search and Ordering Service from 500,000 titles from any publisher in the U.K. This means even if you only know one word from the title, or you only know the author, we can enlist the help of the computer to find that book and check to see if it is still in print and then order and deliver it to you.
