"Yearlings in the Snow"

"Excellent ...Extremely pleasant and fascinating - real art !"
Paul Matthews (UK)

"It had been in the back of my mind for a long time to paint a group of yearlings since it is a stage in their lives when being still 'unbroken' they are living as naturally as domestication permits. They still have a quality of innocence as well as being naturally playful and curious. This is the essence of what I was trying to capture in this picture.

By wandering around their paddock I find that they will always come to investigate me 'the intruder' - not being one of the herd! They generally keep together and take courage from one another but sometimes they pull up a few yards away, not quite sure whether to approach closer or not.....This is the moment that I have chosen to depict in the painting. I felt that by setting it in winter it gave the scene further interest. Horses really enjoy crisp, snowy days and I particularly enjoyed painting their velvety coats and the bare trees in the background. The glowing sky as the sun set on a winter's day helped to accentuate the warm colours of their coats."
